Cassandra identifies “as a contemporary quilter, because I’m going to make whatever I feel like making, and I have no intention of plunking myself inside a box.” Most of her work would be categorized as modern or art quilts, but occasionally elements of the traditional can be seen. She claims to be neurotic about the accurate construction of seams and points. However, she feels that free motion quilting has more energy when it’s a bit wild. Her best advice is, “Be fearless with your work! Try a new technique! Create an original design! You are in control of the fabric!” Check out Cassandra’s website, www.thenotsodramaticlife.com.

Cassandra Beaver started sewing at the age of three or four. She holds two degrees in Theatre Design. Cassandra spent her dramatic career in many roles behind the curtain, including as a costume designer. This skill base enables her to sew almost any design her brain can imagine. She identifies “as a contemporary quilter because I’m going to make whatever I feel like making, and I have no intention of plunking myself inside a box.”

Cassandra’s precise work has paid off with recognition at major shows. She claims to be neurotic about accuracy of seams and points. When it comes to free motion quilting, however, she feels it has more energy when it’s a bit wild. Her best advice is, “Be fearless with your work! Try a new technique! Create an original design! You are in control of the fabric!”

Lynn will share her quilts and talk about her journey from the first quilt she made as a teenager in 1976 to her current work. She lives in Michigan where she creates art, raises chickens, and grows vegetables. Both of Lynn’s parents grew up on farms and, like the little red hen in the children’s story, she was taught to do things from scratch and to never let anything go to waste. Her thrifty upbringing led to her current style of working with scraps and the desire to use “every last piece.” Her quilts have been juried into international shows and gallery exhibits and her work is in private collections around the world. She is the author of Every Last Piece and has also been published in numerous books and magazines. Check out her website: https://www.lynncarsonharris.com

    Intuitive Piecing with Solids

Tickets on sale to members May 5 (non-mbrs May 20)

Please arrive no earlier than 8:45

When using solids, the emphasis is put on the shape of each piece of fabric. The lines and shapes become the focus of the quilt rather than the print of a fabric. The mood of the quilt is set by your piecing and color choice, not by a style of print. Working with free-form, improvisational construction, students will create their own, original quilts using easy to learn design concepts and techniques. This design class is good for the beginning and advanced, traditional and art quilter. Come and join the fun as Lynn shows you easy methods for creating your own original quilts.

    Supply list

Sewing machine and basic sewing kit

    good sewing shears

    Rotary cutter and mat

Ruler- 6"X12" or 6"X24" is suggested

Fabric: bring a total of approximately 3 yards. You can work with predominantly lights, mid-tones or darks. You can work with bright colors or dull colors. Regardless of your predominant tone, include some accent colors. Bring color ideas you like to work with. Scraps and small pieces are fine to add to the mix.

    Graphic Landscape Fabric Collage

Tickets on sale to members June 5 (non-mbrs June 20)

Please arrive no earlier than 8:45

Students will design an original landscape collage using graphic shapes.  They will learn composition tips and new ways to think about principles of design, then they will create detail and add texture with hand embroidery and machine stitching. Plus, they’ll look at lots of examples of how other artists have created unique landscapes.

    Supply List

    • four pieces of fabric approximately 18x11” (fat eighths are fine)
Tone-on-tone and small-scale prints works best. The four fabrics should work well together and vary in value.

    • three to five additional fabrics approximately 8x8” or similar scraps
Pick fabrics that coordinate with the other four fabrics, consider a pop of color contrast, fabrics with flowers or animals that could be fussy cut to include in the landscape. A stripe can be a great option.

Ideally, all your fabrics have fusible webbing applied to the back before the workshop. Follow the instructions in this video for fusing your fabrics ahead of time.

    • fusible webbing, approximately 3 1/2 to 4 yards (if you haven’t fused your fabrics before the workshop)
I only use and recommend Wonder Under and Misty Fuse. (Wonder Under is paper backed and easier to manage for new fusers.)

    • iron and ironing surface

    • parchment paper, about 1 yard

    • batting
Approximately 18 x 18” (Optional: Bring two 18x18” pieces if you’d like to design two complementary landscapes.)

    • your favorite pen for marking fabric and/or chalk pencil

    • 3 to 4 skeins of embroidery floss and/or perle cotton
Chose both darks and lights that coordinate with your fabrics. If you’re purchasing a kit, bring 5 or 6 skeins in colors you love. We’ll make it work.

    • embroidery needle

    • scissors, large and small

    • rotary cutter, mat and ruler

    • thimble, stitching glasses and needle threader if you normally use them

    • sketch book and pen or pencil

    • fabric and fusible for backing, 18x18” (or you can add this at home later)

    Optional supplies

    • sewing machine

    Additional fabric and embroidery floss
Feel free to bring additional fabric if you want to have more choices to work with — especially if you have a stash of pre-fused fabric. This is a great workshop to use those pre-fused scraps. Additional hand embroidery threads may also be nice to have. (It’s a balance between bringing enough to feel creative but not so much that you’re paralyzed by too many options. Whatever you bring, we’ll have a great time exploring possibilities.)

Deborah lives in Lewisville, Texas with her husband, Jeff. She is an artist, author and teacher who creates art quilt collages with layers of fabric, paint and stitching. Her artwork makes a visual impact from across the room. Deborah’s art quilt collages often include personal symbols like ladders, chairs and bowls. She uses stitch as a design element. The shapes, compositions, lines and textures in her work serve as metaphors for ideas and themes including growth, transition, rest and curiosity.

Deborah is the author of Art Quilt Collage: A Creative Journey in Fabric, Paint and Stitch. She has appeared on Quilting Arts TV and The Quilt Show and is published in several books and magazines. Her work has been included in many juried exhibitions. There is even a mural in the Dallas Arts District featuring her work! She is a past president of Studio Art Quilt Associates and a dedicated supporter of art quilts, art quilters and the importance of fiber and textiles in the world of fine art. Captivating Compositions

Tickets on sale to members June 5 (non-mbrs June 20)

Please arrive no earlier than 8:45

This workshop is a lively introduction to design and composition. Deborah introduces eight classic compositions and shares inspiring examples from traditional, modern and art quilting, plus examples from fine art! Learn how using these compositions can generate ideas for fabulous, original work.

Students will create a “sketch” for each of the eight design guides using fused fabrics. Your completed set of fabric sketches can be used for reference and inspiration for future art quilts. Learn to edit, audition and improvise using a super helpful design checklist. Consider augmenting your work by adding details with machine and hand stitching. Appropriate for all levels.

    Supply List

    • five pieces of pre-fused fabrics approximately 12x13” Consider picking a focus fabric and building the other four fabrics around that with small tone on tone prints or solids. At least one fabric should be dark and one should be light. Fabrics don’t need to be measured exactly. Large scale multi-color pints can be tricky for this project. Follow the instructions in this video for fusing your fabrics ahead of time.

    • eight 6.5 x 6.5ish inch pieces of batting or felt any color

    • card stock window (Using an 8x10” piece of card stock paper, mark a 6x6” square and cut it out, leaving you with a window to help with design decisions.)

    • Watch this video to help you choose fabric and prepare your supplies.

    • iron and ironing surface

    • parchment paper

    • embroidery floss and/or perle cotton — A sandwich size plastic bag full of floss will give you lots of options. Choose darks and lights in a variety of colors. If you don’t have embroidery floss in your stash, I suggest bringing 3 to 5 skeins in a variety of colors.

    • embroidery needle

    • thimble, needle threader and stitching glasses if you use them regularly

    • scissors, large and small

    • rotary cutter, ruler (6x12 is great), small rotary mat

    • sketchbook, pen and pencil

Lecture and Trunk Show with Elisabeth Frolet

Local quilter Elisabeth Frolet is originally from France, where she fell in love with quilting. Later, living in the Atlanta area, she taught at Little Quilts and Tiny Stitches. Her needle-turn Baltimore album style quilts and exquisite hand embroidery are a sight to behold. She is self-taught in both applique and embroidery and loves handwork so much that her piecing and quilting stitches are all done by hand. These gorgeous handwork quilts have won first place ribbons at local and regional shows such as Georgia Celebrates Quilts, AQS Paducah, and the International Quilt Show in Houston. Now we have a chance to see Elisabeth’s exquisite stitching in person. We are so pleased to have her for a fabulous trunk show!

Note: Due to a medical sensitivity, Jean requests that students refrain from wearing perfumes during workshops. These products can trigger asthma-like symptoms.

The Spider Web Quilt has been around for hundreds of years and there are many ways to make one. Jean has come up with a quick and accurate method using your scraps of fabric to create a unique quilt. The spider web block can be made traditional, modern, or liberated. Learn new techniques that will improve your speed and accuracy. This will apply to all of your quilt projects.

In this workshop you will have enough time to make a pillow and then if you love the process, you can continue on and make the whole quilt. It’s fun, it’s creative, and you’ll learn techniques that you will continue to use on other quilts you make.

    Supply List:

A required kit, $12 (payable to Jean in class) includes plexiglass template.

Bring your favorite fabric scraps, whether contemporary, modern, traditional, hand dyed, tonal, batiks, or thimbleberries – it looks best when you throw in everything…. Jean’s first Spider Web has over 280 different fabrics. It so excited her, that she made a dozen more.

Finding Your Passion and Running with It

Non-Member lecture tickets available now - click on the Blue Register button.

As a highly sought-after speaker and instructor, Jean captivates her audiences. This lecture is a motivational journey into unlocking creative potential. It all began with that first spiderweb quilt back in 2007. Jean started making one and then found she couldn’t make them fast enough to keep up with all the ideas for this one design. Jean writes, “When one thing leads to another and when you find something that clicks, I think you need to keep at it, maybe you call it a series?” Jean’s presentation includes a tutorial, so quilters will learn something extra while listening to her lecture on how passion can make you more creative. Guided by Albert Einstein’s wisdom—“The easiest way to be creative is to try something different, even if doubt lingers”—she inspires others to embrace the joy of exploration and discovery.

What happens when two inspiring and energetic artists combine their love of quilting, friendship, and talents? Creativity explodes into a one-of-a-kind workshop. Renowned quilters Freddy Moran and Jean Impey joined their creative spirits back in 2017 when they agreed to teach a Collage Retreat. Their process requires a glue stick and basic design principles. Jean says, “I’d dare to claim, this workshop promises to be the most enjoyable one yet!” Dive into the art of crafting expressive faces with ease and minimal materials. Then, uncover unique quilting techniques to bring your design to life, from quilting to binding. Many more examples are on the website, www.sewjean.com.
