Master the art of binding gracefully curved and scalloped quilt edges with confidence! This workshop combines lecture, samples and hands-on practice to guide you through the process of applying bias binding to challenging shapes with ease. You’ll learn to plan binding design; to apply smooth, bulk-free binding; to incorporate charming prairie points. With expert guidance, you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to tackle even the most intricate quilt edges.
Supply List
1 - 36” x 36” quilt (quilted together top, batting, and backing ~ light or medium value
1 - 2” x 150” bias grain binding strip with mitered joins, light, or medium solids - see binding fabric prep in box below – Scallop and Serpentine binding
1 - 2” x 40” crosswise grain strip of fabric, see binding fabric prep in box below – Prairie Points
Sewing machine with a walking foot (built in or attachment) and a needle positioner, if possible
Sewing supplies - the usual suspects, whatever you need to sew comfortably.
Thread for hand and machine sewing, matching, or contrasting ~ your choice.
Hand sewing needles, sharps for hand sewing, a thimble if you use one.
Rotary cutting mat, rotary cutter with new blade.
6” x 18” ruler
White chalk mechanical pencil (Bohin™ is my favorite)
Mechanical pencil – black lead
Hot dry iron, hard surface ironing board
Variety of circle shapes ~ 4-6” ~ templates, plates, lids, etc.
Scissors that can cut a sharp point into layers of fabric
Roll of adding machine or calculator paper tape or similar
Freezer paper
Binding Fabric Preparation- Wash fabric in hot water and mild soap, hang to dry. Saturate with Heavy Duty spray starch, hang to dry. When fabric is dry, steam press until crisp, allow to cool completely before folding.
